Ear candles are an ancient therapy which can be traced back to many civilisations. Evidence that ear candling was used in Asia, the Siberian prairies and most well known of all the native American Indians – primarily the Hopi Tribe.
Over time, as medicine progressed, ear candling was discarded in favour of other treatments such as syringing, use of antibiotics, grommets etc. and the techniques became forgotten.
Today, as we begin to question the effectiveness of modern medicine and look towards a combination of conventional medicine alongside complementary therapies there has been resurgence in interest in ear candling. Once the candle has been lit a process known as convection takes place. Similar to the way a chimney works, impurities are drawn to the surface by circulating airflow. A combination of mild suction and heat circulate vapours within the ear which gently massages the eardrum (tympanic membrane). This helps to alleviate incorrect pressure in the head and especially the sinuses. Facial massage can also increase the effectiveness of ear candling by encouraging the release of toxins from the body and aid relaxation. A one day course OCN accredited
